Travel nurses are often considered to be the most flexible of careers, but there are also some drawbacks. The good news is that you don’t need to worry too much about job security; it tends to depend on your employer.

This means that if you get fired from a particular company, then you will probably not be able to find another position right away. However, you can usually switch employers within a short period of time.

You can earn decent money in a few months – sometimes even less than six weeks. In addition, you can work anywhere, meaning that your schedule can be completely flexible. This is great for people who want to travel.

On the other hand, the pay isn’t always very high. Travelers tend to earn between $12 to $14 an hour. If you are planning to become a traveling nurse, then you may need to do some research first. It can take several years of experience before you get to this level, but the journey is worth it!

Here are the pros and cons I’ve come across over the years:

Pros:

You get to travel. Not only does this give you a great opportunity to see different places, it also gives you the chance to experience different cultures and life styles. This is something I really value.

The money is great. I mean, I’m making more than I did as a stay at home mom and this is even before I started getting paid per mile. I’m making double what I made back then. This is without having to put in as much work, which I love.

Traveling alone. As a single traveler, I can go where and when I want, without having to worry about anyone else. I can also pick where I sleep and how often I eat. This is great if you don’t have family to rely on.

The freedom. I’m pretty much set on my own schedule. I can decide when I want to wake up, eat, shower, and go to bed. If I have a long day ahead of me, I can even choose to sleep in until noon and still be able to catch some Zs. If I don’t want to take my morning shower, that’s fine too. I can skip it. I can get up late if I want to.

Cons:

Staying in a strange place. I’m used to the comforts of home now and while I might like staying in a different country or city, the initial culture shock of living in a foreign place can sometimes be overwhelming.

Missing your family. I’ve mentioned this a few times already, but this one is true. I miss my family and friends. While I am away from them, I miss them even more.

Not knowing anyone. I’m okay with this one, because I know that I’ll eventually meet people and build friendships. However, the first couple of months are pretty tough.

Being away from kids. Being away from children can be difficult. I know that I wouldn’t want to live in a hotel for 6 months straight without seeing my kids, so this can be very hard.

Not being around my doctor. Even though I’m going to a foreign country, I still have to keep my health insurance. This means that I won’t be able to see my doctor right away. I can, however, still get prescriptions filled and go to the ER.

No vacation days. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I’ve definitely missed taking a vacation. It’s hard to go somewhere new every week.

Not being home for holidays. Holidays are special and I do miss them.

The job is never ending. You can be away from home for months at a time.

Sometimes you have to work outside of normal hours. Some jobs have a 9 to 5 policy, while
